Martial law in Poland

A period of military rule imposed in Poland from December 1981 to July 1983 to suppress opposition, especially the independent trade union Solidarity.

Wojciech Jaruzelski: A Polish general and Communist Party leader who headed the government when martial law was imposed. He announced martial law and led the authorities responsible for enforcing it.
Solidarity: A Polish independent trade union and social movement founded in 1980, led by Lech Wałęsa. The movement’s mass membership and challenge to Communist Party rule prompted the crackdown.
