Martin of Tours

Martin of Tours (c. 316–397) was a Roman soldier, monk, and bishop in Gaul, remembered for sharing his cloak with a beggar and for spreading Christianity.

Pannonia: A Roman province in central Europe, covering parts of present-day Hungary, Austria, and neighboring countries. Martin was born in the Roman province of Pannonia.
Sulpicius Severus: A Christian writer of the late fourth and early fifth centuries, best known for the Life of Martin. His biography is the principal ancient account of Martin’s life and miracles.
Cappa Sancti Martini: A relic associated with Martin’s cloak, kept by Frankish rulers and carried on military campaigns. The cloak in the beggar story became a treasured relic and gave rise to the word chapel.
Cloak of Saint Martin: The half-cloak Martin shared with a beggar, an episode central to his Christian legend. The cloak story made compassion for the poor Martin’s most recognizable virtue.
