Martyr

A martyr is a person who suffers or dies rather than renounce a religious belief or other cause. Martyrdom can become a powerful symbol of commitment and collective identity.

Martyrdom: The suffering or death of a person who refuses to renounce a belief or cause. The act gives the martyr’s defining refusal its name.
Confessor of the Faith: A Christian who suffers for the faith but survives without renouncing it. Confessors demonstrate steadfastness without meeting the traditional condition of death.
Stephen the Protomartyr: A figure in the New Testament Acts of the Apostles, traditionally regarded as Christianity’s first martyr. His stoning in Acts provides an early Christian narrative of death for testimony.
Maccabean Martyrs: Jewish figures in accounts of persecution who die rather than abandon religious law. Their stories helped establish a tradition of fidelity under coercion before Christianity.
Canonization: The formal recognition by the Catholic Church that a deceased person is a saint. Canonization can institutionalize the memory of a Christian martyr.
Witness: Public testimony that affirms a belief, event, or truth. The word martyr derives from a term for witness, linking suffering with testimony.
Persecution: Systematic hostility or mistreatment directed at people because of their identity, beliefs, or affiliations. Persecution may produce martyrs, though suffering alone does not make someone one.
Polycarp: A second-century bishop of Smyrna whose execution is recounted in an early Christian martyr narrative. His account became a formative example of Christian steadfastness before execution.
Early Christianity: The movement and communities that emerged around Jesus and his followers in the first centuries CE. Christian martyr ideals and narratives took shape in these early communities.
Religious Persecution: Hostility or coercion targeting people because of their religious beliefs or practices. Martyrs’ stories often become evidence and enduring symbols of religious persecution.
