Martyrdom

Martyrdom is the status or condition of someone killed for a cause, belief, or political struggle. It can become a powerful symbol through how communities remember and interpret the death.

Martyr: A person killed or persecuted for a cause, belief, or political struggle. The person’s death or suffering is what communities interpret as martyrdom.
Witness: A person who directly observes an event or gives testimony about it. Witnesses can establish how a death occurred and what cause it represented.
Socrates: An Athenian philosopher sentenced to death in 399 BCE for impiety and corrupting the young. Later accounts cast his chosen submission to the sentence as fidelity to philosophical principle.
Execution: The carrying out of a sentence of death imposed by legal or political authority. An execution describes how someone dies, while martyrdom interprets the death in relation to a cause.
Political martyr: A person killed or persecuted because of political beliefs or activity. Political movements may frame such a death as proof of oppression or commitment.
Hagiography: Writing that presents a holy person’s life as an exemplary account of virtue. Accounts of martyrs often shape events into narratives of exemplary sacrifice.
Husayn ibn Ali: A grandson of Muhammad killed with his small party at Karbala in 680 CE. His death is central to Shi'a accounts of sacrifice, injustice, and religious memory.
Assassination: The deliberate killing of a prominent person, usually for political or ideological reasons. Assassination identifies a targeted killing without determining whether the victim is regarded as a martyr.
Collective memory: The shared ways groups remember and interpret their past. Remembering a death shapes whether it is treated as martyrdom.
Canonization: The formal declaration by the Catholic Church that a deceased person is a saint. In Catholic tradition, martyrdom can be a route to recognition as a saint.
