Marwan I

Marwan I was an Umayyad caliph whose rule began in 684 during the Second Fitna. He restored Umayyad authority in Syria and founded the Marwanid branch of the dynasty.

Second Fitna: A civil war in the early Islamic caliphate, fought mainly from 680 to 692 over political legitimacy. The conflict created the opening for Marwan’s accession in 684.
Abd al-Malik: An Umayyad caliph who ruled from 685 to 705 and consolidated the dynasty after the Second Fitna. Marwan designated his son as successor, enabling Abd al-Malik to continue the recovery.
Uthman: The third caliph, who ruled from 644 to 656 and belonged to the Umayyad clan of Quraysh. Marwan served as Uthman’s secretary and was connected to the caliph through clan and court.
Battle of Khazir: A battle in 686 in which pro-Alid forces defeated an Umayyad army in Iraq. The defeat exposed the limits of Marwan’s control beyond Syria.
Battle of Marj Rahit: A battle in 684 in which Marwan’s forces defeated the Qays confederation in Syria. This victory secured Marwan’s position among Syrian Umayyad supporters.
Marwanid dynasty: The branch of the Umayyad dynasty descended from Marwan I, which ruled the caliphate from 684 to 750. Marwan’s succession arrangements established this branch’s long rule.
Yazid I: An Umayyad caliph who ruled from 680 to 683 and was succeeded by his son Muawiya II. Yazid’s death began the succession crisis in which Marwan rose.
Tawwabun: A movement of Kufan supporters of Husayn ibn Ali who rebelled against the Umayyads in 684–685. Their uprising was one of the revolts Marwan’s government faced.
Muawiya II: An Umayyad caliph who ruled briefly in 683–684 after the death of his father, Yazid I. His short reign and death left the Umayyad succession unsettled.
Umayyad Caliphate: An Islamic caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750, with its capital at Damascus. Marwan’s reign restored the caliphate’s Syrian-centered Umayyad government.
