Marxist historiography

Marxist historiography interprets historical change through material conditions, modes of production, and conflicts among social classes. It treats economic and social relations as central forces shaping institutions and ideas.

Historical materialism: A theory that explains historical development through material conditions and changes in production. It supplies the broad explanatory framework Marxist historians apply to particular societies and periods.
Karl Marx: A nineteenth-century philosopher and political economist whose writings developed a critique of capitalism and historical materialism. His account of class relations and production became a foundation for later Marxist historical interpretation.
Georgi Plekhanov: A Russian Marxist theorist who helped introduce Marxism to the Russian revolutionary movement. His writings systematized materialist explanations of history for later Marxist thinkers.
Annales School: A French historical movement that emphasized long-term social structures, geography, and everyday life. Its structural interests overlap with Marxism, but its methods do not center class struggle in the same way.
History from below: Historical writing that centers ordinary people and groups often excluded from elite narratives. Marxist attention to workers and popular struggle helped make subaltern experience a subject of historical inquiry.
Mode of production: A society's organization of productive forces and the social relations through which production occurs. Changes in how societies produce and distribute goods anchor accounts of historical change.
Friedrich Engels: A German philosopher and socialist who collaborated with Karl Marx and developed Marxist theory. His historical and political writings helped shape the tradition alongside Marx's work.
Vladimir Lenin: A Russian revolutionary and political theorist who led the Bolshevik Revolution and developed Marxist political theory. His analyses of imperialism and revolution shaped Marxist accounts of modern political change.
Idealist historiography: Historical interpretation that gives primary explanatory weight to ideas, beliefs, or intellectual change. It reverses the emphasis Marxist historians place on material conditions and social relations.
Labor history: The study of workers, workplaces, labor movements, and the social relations of work. Class analysis gave historians tools to study workers as historical actors rather than background figures.
