Mary Cartwright

Mary Cartwright (1900–1998) was a British mathematician whose research on nonlinear differential equations revealed complex behavior in forced oscillators and helped establish ideas later central to chaos theory.

Differential equation: An equation relating a function to one or more of its derivatives. Cartwright studied equations whose solutions describe changing physical systems.
J. E. Littlewood: A British mathematician known for work in analysis, number theory, and differential equations. Littlewood and Cartwright jointly analyzed a nonlinear oscillator under periodic forcing.
Radar: A system that detects objects by transmitting radio waves and analyzing their reflections. Wartime radar research prompted Cartwright and Littlewood to investigate nonlinear oscillations.
Chaos theory: The study of deterministic systems whose long-term behavior can be highly sensitive to initial conditions. Cartwright’s results are regarded as an early mathematical foundation for this later field.
Nonlinear system: A system whose governing equations do not satisfy linearity, allowing effects such as multiple responses and complex dynamics. Nonlinearity made the oscillator in Cartwright’s joint work behave in ways linear analysis could not capture.
G. H. Hardy: A British mathematician whose work shaped number theory and mathematical analysis in the early twentieth century. Hardy supervised Cartwright’s doctoral research at Oxford.
Magnetron: A vacuum tube that generates microwaves using the interaction of electrons and magnetic fields. The radar transmitter’s magnetron motivated analysis of a periodically forced nonlinear circuit.
Sensitive dependence on initial conditions: A property in which small differences in initial states can produce large differences in later states. The complex oscillator dynamics she helped uncover foreshadowed this hallmark of chaos.
Dynamical system: A mathematical model describing how a system’s state changes over time. Her equations belong to the broader study of evolving states and their long-term behavior.
Damehood: A British honor that grants its recipient the title Dame. Cartwright became the first woman mathematician elected to the Royal Society and was later made a Dame.
