Mary Somerville

Mary Somerville (1780–1872) was a Scottish mathematician and science writer whose influential books explained astronomy and physical science to broad audiences.

William Somerville: A Scottish physician who supported Mary Somerville’s scientific studies and became her second husband. His support helped Somerville pursue mathematics and science despite limited formal education.
The Mechanism of the Heavens: Mary Somerville’s 1831 exposition of celestial mechanics, based chiefly on Laplace’s work. This book established her reputation by rendering difficult mathematical astronomy intelligible.
