Mary Whiton Calkins

Mary Whiton Calkins was an American psychologist and philosopher whose work on memory and self-psychology helped shape early psychology. She became the first woman president of the American Psychological Association.

Paired-associate learning: A learning method in which participants memorize pairs of items and later recall one item when shown its partner. Calkins developed this method to study how frequency and recency affect memory.
William James: An American philosopher and psychologist who helped establish pragmatism and wrote influential accounts of mind and experience. James taught Calkins at Harvard and influenced her philosophical and psychological work.
Smith College: A private liberal arts college for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, founded in 1871. Calkins graduated from Smith and later joined its faculty before pursuing advanced psychology training.
