Marylebone Cricket Club

Marylebone Cricket Club is a London sports institution founded in 1787, best known as cricket’s former governing body and custodian of the Laws of Cricket. It also published early standardized lawn-tennis rules in 1875.

Lawn tennis: A racket sport played on a grass, clay, or hard court, developed from earlier forms of tennis. The club’s 1875 rules helped define this emerging outdoor form of tennis.
Laws of Cricket: The rules that govern how cricket is played, maintained by Marylebone Cricket Club. Their stewardship is the clearest expression of the club’s rule-making role.

Sphairistikè: A lawn-tennis game patented by Walter Clopton Wingfield in 1874 and sold with equipment and rules. The club’s 1875 rules adapted and regularized this commercially promoted game.
