Masada

Masada is an ancient fortress on a plateau overlooking the Dead Sea in the Judaean Desert. Its Roman siege in 73 or 74 CE and the deaths of its Jewish defenders made it a lasting symbol of resistance.

Roman siege ramp at Masada: An earthen ramp built by Roman forces against Masada’s western side to bring siege equipment to the fortress walls. Its remains show the engineering method used to breach Masada’s defenses.
Hasmonean dynasty: A Jewish ruling dynasty that governed an independent Judaea from the second to the first century BCE. Masada’s earliest known fortifications date to the Hasmonean period before Herod’s expansion.
Masada bathhouse: A Roman-style bath complex at Masada, with heated rooms and a system for supplying hot air beneath floors. Its sophisticated design shows the comforts available inside the fortress.
Masada myth: The modern national narrative that presents the defenders of Masada as exemplars of Jewish resistance and sacrifice. The fortress’s modern symbolism extends beyond what archaeology alone can establish.
Siege of Jerusalem (70 CE): The Roman siege and destruction of Jerusalem during the First Jewish–Roman War in 70 CE. Unlike Jerusalem’s extensive destruction, Masada’s siege left a different and more limited archaeological record.
