Masaki Kobayashi

Masaki Kobayashi (1916–1996) was a Japanese film director whose work confronted militarism, institutional cruelty, and moral compromise. His major films include the antiwar trilogy The Human Condition and the samurai drama Harakiri.

The Human Condition: A three-part Japanese film epic following an idealistic man through wartime labor camps and military service in Manchuria. Kobayashi’s most sustained indictment of wartime oppression and moral compromise.
Deep focus: A cinematographic technique that keeps objects at different distances sharply focused within one shot. Kobayashi’s deep compositions let individuals and enclosing institutions occupy the frame together.
