Masaoka Shiki

Masaoka Shiki (1867–1902) was a Japanese poet, critic, and editor who reshaped modern haiku and tanka through literary reform and advocacy of observation-based composition.

Haiku: A short Japanese poetic form traditionally organized around a seasonal reference and a 5–7–5 sound pattern. Shiki treated haiku as an independent literary form and helped establish its modern name.
Shasei: A Japanese artistic principle of depicting things from life through direct observation. Shiki urged poets to render observed subjects plainly rather than rely on inherited convention.
Edo period: The period of Japanese history from 1603 to 1868, when the Tokugawa shogunate ruled Japan. Shiki inherited poetic traditions formed during this era, including established haiku schools.
