Mashhad

Mashhad is a city in northeastern Iran and the capital of Razavi Khorasan province. Its Imam Reza shrine makes it Iran’s leading pilgrimage destination.

Imam Reza Shrine: A major Shia shrine in Mashhad containing the tomb of the eighth Imam, Ali al-Rida. Its expanding complex anchors Mashhad’s religious identity and historic center.
Ali al-Rida: The eighth imam in Twelver Shia Islam, who died in Tus in 818. His tomb became the sacred focus around which Mashhad developed.

Harun al-Rashid: The fifth Abbasid caliph, whose reign lasted from 786 to 809. Tradition associates his burial near Ali al-Rida with the site’s early history.
Shah Abbas I: A Safavid shah who ruled Iran from 1588 to 1629. His pilgrimage to Mashhad and patronage helped raise the shrine’s prestige.
Imam Reza International Airport: The principal airport serving Mashhad, with domestic and international passenger connections. It carries pilgrims and other visitors directly into the city.
Tehran: The capital and largest city of Iran. Tehran is Iran’s political center, while Mashhad’s prominence rests especially on pilgrimage.
