Mass psychogenic illness

Mass psychogenic illness is the rapid spread of similar symptoms within a group without an identifiable organic cause. Stress, shared expectations, and social contact can contribute to its onset and transmission.

Psychogenic illness: Physical or psychological symptoms caused or maintained by psychological processes rather than an identified structural disease. Mass psychogenic illness is a group-level form of symptoms understood through psychological processes.
Tanganyika laughter epidemic: A 1962 episode of prolonged, spreading laughter among students and nearby communities in Tanganyika. It is a classic reported outbreak in which symptoms spread through social networks.
Epidemiology: The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related conditions in populations. Outbreak patterns and links among affected people are examined epidemiologically.
Stigma: A social process that devalues people because of an attributed characteristic or condition. Calling symptoms psychogenic can lead affected people to be dismissed or blamed.

Outbreak investigation: A systematic inquiry into the source, spread, and causes of an unusual cluster of illness. Investigators use it to test infectious, toxic, and other explanations before settling on a cause.
Diagnostic overshadowing: The misattribution of new symptoms to an existing diagnosis instead of evaluating them independently. A psychogenic explanation can obscure an organic condition if applied prematurely.
Mass psychogenic illness diagnosis: An assessment of a symptom cluster in which psychological and social transmission is considered after plausible organic causes are investigated. No single test confirms the diagnosis; the explanation depends on evidence about the outbreak.
