Massawa

Massawa is a port city on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast and the country’s principal maritime gateway. Its history reflects trade, colonial rule, war, and its strategic position on the Red Sea.

Ottoman Empire: A transcontinental empire centered in Anatolia that lasted from the late thirteenth century until 1922. Ottoman forces took control of Massawa in the sixteenth century, beginning a long era of external rule.
Red Sea: A seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean between northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Massawa’s harbor opens onto this major maritime corridor.
Battle of Massawa: A 1990 battle in which Eritrean forces captured Massawa from Ethiopian troops. The battle marked a decisive military turning point for control of the port.

Massawa Harbor: The deep-water harbor serving Massawa on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast. The harbor gives the city its central role in maritime trade and transport.
Massawa Old Town: The historic island quarter of Massawa, known for Ottoman-era and later architecture. Its buildings preserve evidence of the city’s successive rulers and trading communities.
Ethiopia–Eritrea relations: The political and economic relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea since Eritrean independence. Massawa’s use as a trade gateway depends partly on relations with landlocked Ethiopia.
