Master System

The Master System is a home video game console developed by Sega and released in 1985 as the successor to the SG-1000. It competed with Nintendo’s Famicom and Nintendo Entertainment System.

Zilog Z80: An 8-bit microprocessor designed by Zilog and used in computers and game consoles. The Master System uses a Z80 as its main CPU.
SG-1000: Sega’s first home video game console, released in Japan in 1983. The Master System succeeded this console and built on its 8-bit platform.
Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit video game): A 1991 platform game for the Master System and Game Gear, developed by Ancient. This distinct 8-bit Sonic game demonstrated Sega’s later support for the console.
Tectoy: A Brazilian electronics company that licensed and distributed Sega products in Brazil. Tectoy’s localization and continued support helped the Master System remain popular in Brazil.
Video Display Processor: A specialized chip that generates a video signal by processing graphics data. The console’s video processor draws sprites, backgrounds, and color from video memory.
Sega Mark II: A 1984 revision of Sega’s SG-1000 home console, released in Japan. It preceded the Mark III in Sega’s sequence of 8-bit console revisions.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World: A 1986 platform game for the Master System starring Sega mascot Alex Kidd. Its inclusion in some console models made it a defining early Master System game.
Sega of America: The American subsidiary responsible for marketing and distributing Sega products in the United States. Its competition with Nintendo defined the Master System’s North American commercial fortunes.
ROM cartridge: A removable game medium containing read-only memory and, sometimes, additional hardware. Most Master System games came on cartridges inserted into the console.
Nintendo Entertainment System: Nintendo’s 8-bit home video game console, released in North America in 1985. Its market dominance made it the Master System’s principal rival outside Japan.
