Mataram Sultanate

An early modern Javanese Muslim kingdom that ruled much of central and eastern Java from the late 16th century until its division in 1755.

Ki Ageng Pemanahan: A Javanese lord who received the Mataram domain from the Pajang ruler Hadiwijaya. His grant established the dynasty’s base in the Mataram region.
Sultan Agung: The Mataram ruler who reigned from 1613 to 1645 and expanded the kingdom across much of Java. His campaigns and court reforms marked the kingdom’s greatest concentration of power.
Amangkurat I: A Mataram ruler from 1646 to 1677 whose reign faced rebellions and growing Dutch influence. His contested rule helped trigger the crisis that weakened the kingdom.
Surakarta Sunanate: A Javanese monarchy established in 1755 as one successor to the Mataram Sultanate. The Treaty of Giyanti made Surakarta the other principal successor court.
Panembahan Senapati: The first ruler of Mataram, who expanded its power in Java in the late 16th century. He transformed the Mataram domain into an independent kingdom.
Javanese court culture: The political, artistic, and ritual traditions developed at the courts of Java’s rulers. Mataram used court ceremony and cultural patronage to express royal authority.
Trunajaya rebellion: A major revolt against Mataram led by the Madurese prince Trunajaya from 1674 to 1680. The rebellion forced Mataram to seek Dutch military aid at great political cost.
Mangkunegaran: A Javanese principality founded in 1757 by Raden Mas Said, later titled Mangkunegara I. Its creation further divided authority in the former Mataram lands.
Pajang Sultanate: A Javanese Muslim kingdom that preceded Mataram’s rise in the late 16th century. Mataram emerged from territory granted by Pajang and later displaced its authority.
Javanese calendar: A lunisolar calendar system used in Java, combining Islamic lunar months with a Javanese cycle. Sultan Agung’s calendar reform linked Islamic timekeeping to Javanese cycles.
