Knowra Maternal mortality Maternal mortality Maternal mortality is the death of a woman during pregnancy or within a defined period after pregnancy ends, from causes related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management.
Postpartum hemorrhage : Severe bleeding after childbirth, often caused by failure of the uterus to contract. It is a leading direct obstetric cause of maternal death and can progress rapidly.
Maternal mortality ratio : Maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in a specified period. This standard indicator compares maternal death burdens across places and time.
Skilled birth attendant : An accredited health professional competent to manage normal childbirth and identify, manage, or refer complications. Skilled attendance can enable early detection and treatment of life-threatening complications.
Pregnancy-related death : The death of a woman during pregnancy or within a specified period after its end, regardless of cause. It includes incidental causes that maternal-death definitions exclude.
Preeclampsia : A pregnancy disorder marked by new-onset hypertension and signs of organ dysfunction, usually after 20 weeks of gestation. It can lead to seizures, stroke, or organ failure without timely recognition and treatment.
Maternal mortality rate : Maternal deaths in a population of women of reproductive age over a specified period. Unlike the ratio, this measure accounts for the size of the population at risk.
Emergency obstetric care : Urgent clinical interventions for severe complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Access to procedures such as blood transfusion and cesarean delivery can avert deaths.
Late maternal death : A death from direct or indirect obstetric causes occurring more than 42 days but less than one year after pregnancy ends. It captures deaths beyond the usual 42-day maternal-death reporting window.
Maternal sepsis : A life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by infection during pregnancy, childbirth, or after pregnancy ends. Infection can become fatal when diagnosis or effective treatment is delayed.
Maternal death surveillance and response : A system for identifying, reviewing, and responding to maternal deaths to prevent future deaths. Reviewing each death can reveal avoidable delays and gaps in care.
