Mathieu Kérékou

Mathieu Kérékou was a Beninese military officer and politician who ruled from 1972 to 1991 and served as president again from 1996 to 2006.

1972 Beninese coup d'état: A military coup on 26 October 1972 that brought Mathieu Kérékou to power in Dahomey. The coup established Kérékou’s first government and began his nearly two-decade rule.
