Mathieu Orfila

Mathieu Orfila (1787–1853) was a Spanish-born French physician and chemist who helped establish forensic toxicology through systematic studies of poisons and their detection.

Forensic toxicology: The analysis of biological and other evidence for toxic substances in legal investigations. Orfila’s work helped establish this field as a scientific discipline.
Poison: A substance capable of causing illness, injury, or death through its chemical effects on an organism. Orfila organized his research around how poisonous substances affect the body.
