Matilda of Tuscany

Matilda of Tuscany (c. 1046–1115) was a powerful Italian ruler whose lands and armies supported the papacy during the Investiture Controversy. She became known for her role in the 1077 meeting at Canossa between Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV.
