Matrilineality

Matrilineality is a system of descent in which people trace kinship and group membership through their mothers. It does not necessarily mean women hold political power or that property passes from mother to daughter.

Unilineal descent: A descent system that traces group membership through one parental line. Matrilineality is one form of descent through a single parental line.
Matrilineage: A descent group whose members trace their ancestry through a shared maternal line. It is the kin group formed by tracing descent through mothers.
Minangkabau people: An Indigenous people of West Sumatra with matrilineal clans and inheritance traditions. Their kin groups and important ancestral property pass through maternal lines.
Matriachry: A social system in which women hold predominant political authority. Matrilineality concerns descent, not necessarily women's dominance in political life.
Patrilineality: A descent system that traces kinship and group membership through fathers. It traces descent through fathers rather than mothers.
Clan: A social group whose members identify as descendants of a common ancestor. Matrilineal clans transmit membership through maternal ancestry.
Haudenosaunee: A confederacy of Indigenous nations in northeastern North America, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. Clan identity passes through mothers, and clan mothers have roles in political leadership.
Patrilocal residence: A postmarital residence pattern in which a couple lives with or near the husband's family. It contrasts with matrilocal residence, which can accompany maternal descent.
Bilateral descent: A descent system that recognizes kinship and inheritance through both parents. It contrasts with matrilineal systems by recognizing both parental lines.
Exogamy: A rule requiring marriage outside a person's social group. Matrilineal groups may use exogamy to regulate marriage between lineages.
