Matthew Fontaine Maury

Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806–1873) was an American naval officer and oceanographer whose wind and current charts helped establish modern physical oceanography.

The Physical Geography of the Sea: An 1855 book by Maury explaining ocean currents, winds, tides, and other features of the sea. This influential book brought his oceanographic findings to a wide audience.
Maury Collection: A system of standardized logbooks used to collect observations from ships at sea. These forms made observations from many vessels comparable.
United States Naval Observatory: A United States institution established in 1830 to provide astronomical and navigational services to the Navy. Maury directed the observatory and developed its hydrographic work into a broader oceanographic program.
