Maui

Maui is the second-largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, formed by two shield volcanoes joined by a low isthmus. Its landscapes include the dormant volcano Haleakalā.

Haleakalā: A dormant shield volcano that forms eastern Maui and rises to 10,023 feet above sea level. Its summit and crater dominate Maui’s eastern landscape.
Haleakalā National Park: A national park on Maui protecting the Haleakalā summit area and the Kīpahulu coast. It preserves the island’s summit and a remote coastal district.
Kamehameha I: The Hawaiian ruler who unified the Hawaiian Islands under one kingdom in the early nineteenth century. His conquest of Maui helped establish unified Hawaiian rule.
Hawaii tourism: The travel industry built around Hawaii’s landscapes, culture, and visitor services. Tourism is a major force in Maui’s economy and land use.
West Maui Mountains: The deeply eroded remains of the shield volcano that formed western Maui. They make up Maui’s older volcanic half.
Hana Highway: A winding road along Maui’s northeastern coast connecting Kahului with the community of Hāna. Its route crosses rainforests, valleys, and coastal cliffs.
Queen Kaʻahumanu: A powerful Hawaiian queen and regent who helped govern the Kingdom of Hawaii after Kamehameha I’s death. Her influence was centered in part on Maui, where she was born.
2023 Hawaii wildfires: A series of destructive wildfires in Hawaii in August 2023, including a fire that devastated Lahaina on Maui. The Lahaina fire profoundly affected Maui’s people and historic district.
Hawaiian Islands: An archipelago of volcanic islands and atolls in the central North Pacific Ocean. Maui is one island in this volcanic chain.
ʻĪao Valley: A steep, lush valley in West Maui containing the natural rock pinnacle known as ʻĪao Needle. It exposes the island’s eroded volcanic terrain.
