Maurice of Nassau

Maurice of Nassau (1567–1625) was a Dutch military commander and stadtholder who led the Dutch Republic’s campaigns against Spain and helped shape its military institutions.

Siege of Breda (1590): A Dutch operation in 1590 that captured Breda from Spanish forces using soldiers hidden in a peat barge. The barge ruse became a celebrated early success in Maurice’s campaigns.
Dutch States Army: The standing army maintained by the Dutch Republic during its war for independence and afterward. Maurice commanded and reorganized this army during its formative campaigns.
William the Silent: The leader of the Dutch revolt against Spain and father of Maurice of Nassau. William’s assassination in 1584 preceded Maurice’s rise to military and political leadership.
