Max Factor

Max Factor was a Polish-born American cosmetics entrepreneur who developed products for film performers and helped popularize the term “make-up.”

Greasepaint: A heavy, oil-based theatrical makeup used to color performers’ faces under stage lighting. Factor adapted theatrical greasepaint into products suited to the camera.
Łódź: A city in central Poland that was a major industrial center in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Factor was born in Łódź in 1877.
Frank Factor: A son of Max Factor who became an executive in the family cosmetics business. Frank helped continue the company after his father’s death.
Makeup: Cosmetic products applied to the face or body to alter or enhance appearance. Factor helped popularize “make-up” as the name for cosmetics used beyond theatrical settings.
Pancake makeup: A water-activated foundation developed for film that provided an even, matte complexion. Factor created this foundation to address the shortcomings of earlier screen makeup.
Russian Empire: A state ruled by Russian emperors from 1721 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. Factor worked in the empire before emigrating to the United States.
Davis Factor: A son of Max Factor who worked in the family cosmetics business. Davis joined the next generation of the company’s leadership.
Cosmetics industry: The commercial production and sale of products used for personal appearance and grooming. His studio innovations became products for a broad consumer market.
Technicolor: A color motion-picture process that recorded and reproduced vivid hues through successive technical systems. Color cinematography prompted Factor to formulate makeup that looked natural on film.
St. Louis World's Fair: The 1904 exposition in St. Louis that showcased industrial, cultural, and commercial exhibits. Factor moved to the United States with his family around the time of the fair.
