Max von Sydow

Max von Sydow (1929–2020) was a Swedish-French actor whose career spanned European art cinema and international productions, including The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist, and Pelle the Conqueror.

The Seventh Seal: Ingmar Bergman’s 1957 film follows a medieval knight who plays chess with Death during the Black Death. Von Sydow’s knight Antonius Block became one of his signature screen roles.
