Max Wertheimer

Max Wertheimer (1880–1943) was a German psychologist who helped found Gestalt psychology. His research on apparent motion helped establish the movement as an alternative to element-based accounts of perception.

Gestalt psychology: A school of psychology that studies how organized wholes shape perception and thought. Wertheimer co-founded this school and helped define its rejection of element-by-element explanations.
University of Frankfurt: A German university where Wertheimer conducted influential research on visual perception. Wertheimer carried out his apparent-motion experiments there in 1910.
Structuralism (psychology): An early school of psychology that analyzed conscious experience into basic sensations and feelings. Wertheimer rejected its element-by-element approach to perceptual organization.
