Maxim gun

The Maxim gun is a recoil-operated, belt-fed machine gun developed by Hiram Maxim in the 1880s. It was the first practical fully automatic firearm, using recoil to cycle its action and fire continuously while the trigger was held.

Recoil operation: A firearm mechanism that uses energy from recoil to cycle the action and prepare another shot. The barrel and bolt recoil together, powering the Maxim gun’s firing cycle.
Hiram Maxim: An American-born inventor and engineer who developed the Maxim machine gun and later worked in Britain. His experiments with firearm recoil produced the gun’s operating principle.
Battle of Omdurman: An 1898 battle in Sudan in which Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the Mahdist army near Omdurman. British Maxim guns were used in a starkly unequal demonstration of rapid-fire weapons.

Arms race: A competition between states to develop or acquire greater military capabilities than their rivals. The Maxim’s effectiveness encouraged governments to seek comparable rapid-fire weapons.
