Maximilien Robespierre

Maximilien Robespierre (1758–1794) was a French lawyer and revolutionary politician who became a leading figure in the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror.

Georges Danton: A French revolutionary leader and prominent figure in the National Convention, executed in 1794. Danton’s execution deepened divisions among revolutionaries and preceded Robespierre’s own downfall.
Committee of Public Safety: A committee of the French National Convention that governed France during the emergency of 1793–1794. Robespierre joined this governing body in July 1793 and became one of its most prominent members.
Estates-General of 1789: An assembly of France’s three estates convened by Louis XVI in 1789 amid a fiscal and political crisis. Robespierre entered national politics as a deputy to the Third Estate at this assembly.

Law of 22 Prairial: A June 1794 law that sharply restricted defendants’ rights and expanded the Revolutionary Tribunal’s power to condemn. Robespierre supported the law, which accelerated executions during the Terror’s final phase.
