Maya script : The logosyllabic writing system used by the ancient Maya to record language. Its signs carry the texts painted across the codices’ folded pages.
Dresden Codex : A pre-Columbian Maya book, especially known for its astronomical and calendrical tables. Its Venus and eclipse tables make it the richest surviving source for Maya astronomical calculation.
Maya scribes : Specialists who wrote, painted, and copied texts in Maya communities. Their skilled work joined hieroglyphic writing, images, and calendrical knowledge in books.
Venus table : A table tracking the synodic cycle of Venus, its repeated appearances in the sky relative to the Sun. The Dresden Codex uses one to coordinate Venus cycles with ritual and calendrical dates.
Amate : Bark paper made from the inner bark of trees, traditionally used in Mesoamerica for books and other objects. Amate provided the writing surface for surviving Maya screenfold books.
Madrid Codex : A surviving Maya screenfold book containing divinatory almanacs and ritual scenes. Its pages preserve extensive records of ceremonies, offerings, and everyday divination.
Maya civilization : A Mesoamerican civilization with a long history of cities, writing, mathematics, and political states. Codex making belonged to the wider intellectual and artistic traditions of Maya societies.
Maya astronomy : The observation and calculation of celestial cycles by Maya scholars. Codex tables preserve systematic records of planetary and eclipse cycles.
Screenfold : A continuous sheet folded back and forth into a sequence of connected panels. This format let scribes create long books that opened out into multiple pages.
Paris Codex : A surviving Maya codex containing prophecies and records associated with Maya period endings. Its surviving pages connect divination with cycles of time and rulers.
