McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

The F-15 Eagle is a U.S. twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter designed for air superiority. It first flew in 1972 and entered U.S. Air Force service in 1976.

Pratt & Whitney F100: A family of afterburning turbofan engines developed for U.S. fighter aircraft, including the F-15 and F-16. Twin F100 engines give the Eagle the thrust behind its acceleration and climb performance.
FX program: The U.S. Air Force fighter development program that produced the F-15 Eagle. The Eagle was the aircraft selected to meet the FX program's air-superiority requirement.
F-15C Eagle: A single-seat air-superiority version of the F-15 used by the U.S. Air Force and other operators. The F-15C became the principal single-seat operational air-superiority Eagle.
1982 Lebanon War: A conflict between Israel and Lebanon in which Israeli aircraft fought Syrian forces over the Bekaa Valley. Israeli F-15s scored air-to-air victories during the Bekaa Valley air battles.
AN/APG-63 radar: A family of pulse-Doppler radar systems developed for the F-15 Eagle. The original radar gave the F-15 long-range detection and fire-control capability.
Vietnam War air combat: Aerial combat during the Vietnam War, which exposed limitations in U.S. fighter tactics, training, and aircraft design. Combat experience in Vietnam helped shape the requirements for the F-15.
F-15E Strike Eagle: A two-seat F-15 variant designed for long-range strike missions as well as air-to-air combat. The Strike Eagle adapted the Eagle airframe for deep interdiction and multirole missions.
Gulf War air campaign: The 1991 coalition air campaign against Iraqi forces during the Gulf War. U.S. F-15s accounted for many coalition air-to-air victories in this campaign.
AIM-7 Sparrow: A U.S. semi-active radar-guided air-to-air missile used by fighter aircraft. The F-15 initially used Sparrow missiles for engagements beyond visual range.
MiG-25: A Soviet interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft known for its high speed and altitude performance. Reports about the MiG-25 intensified U.S. concern about a capable Soviet air threat.
