McMurdo Sound

McMurdo Sound is an inlet of the Ross Sea between Ross Island and mainland Antarctica. It is a major route and operating area for Antarctic research and logistics.

McMurdo Station: The largest research station in Antarctica, operated by the United States on Ross Island. The station sits on the sound’s shore and anchors much of its research and logistics.
Ross Sea polynya: A recurring area of open water or thin ice in the Ross Sea, maintained by winds and ocean processes. Its open water can influence regional sea-ice conditions and access near the sound.
James Clark Ross: A British naval officer and polar explorer who led Antarctic expeditions in the 1840s. His expedition explored the sound and named nearby features.
Ross Island: A volcanic island in the Ross Sea, dominated by Mount Erebus and Mount Terror. Its western shore forms one side of McMurdo Sound.
Scott Base: New Zealand’s Antarctic research station on Ross Island, near McMurdo Station. It is another permanent research base reached through the sound.
Fast ice: Sea ice attached to a coastline, ice front, or seabed and largely fixed in place. Fast ice forms a changing platform along parts of the sound’s coast.
Ross Expedition: The British Antarctic expedition of 1839–1843, led by James Clark Ross. It charted McMurdo Sound during its exploration of the Ross Sea region.
Mount Erebus: An active volcano on Ross Island and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. Its summit rises above the island bordering the sound.
United States Antarctic Program: The United States government program that conducts and supports Antarctic research. Its personnel and supplies use McMurdo Sound as a principal access route.
Sea ice: Frozen ocean water that forms, grows, and melts at the sea surface. The sound’s seasonal accessibility depends strongly on surrounding sea ice.
