Me Too movement

A movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault that supports survivors and challenges abuses of power. The #MeToo hashtag amplified it globally in 2017.

Tarana Burke: An American activist who founded the Me Too movement to support survivors of sexual violence, especially young women of color. Burke began the movement in 2006, more than a decade before the hashtag spread worldwide.
Social media activism: Collective political action organized or amplified through social-media platforms. #MeToo used social platforms to connect individual disclosures into visible collective testimony.
Ronald M. Machen Jr.: An American attorney who served as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and supported the campaign against campus sexual assault. He helped establish the 2013 Know Your IX campaign, an organizing effort that preceded #MeToo’s rise.
Hollaback!: A global movement to end harassment in public spaces through community action and survivor support. It addresses street harassment, a related form of abuse that #MeToo also made more visible.
#MeToo in the United States Congress: The response to sexual harassment allegations in Congress, including changes to the rules governing complaints and settlements. Public pressure contributed to the 2018 Congressional Accountability Act reform.
#MeToo: A social-media hashtag used to disclose experiences of sexual harassment and assault and show their prevalence. The hashtag became the movement’s global rallying point in 2017.
Hashtag activism: Political or social campaigning organized around a shared hashtag on digital platforms. The hashtag made separate accounts searchable and recognizable as part of one movement.
Anita Hill: An American law professor whose 1991 Senate testimony accused Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. Her testimony shaped later public discussions of workplace harassment, credibility, and institutional power.
SlutWalk: A protest movement against victim-blaming and sexual violence that began in 2011. It shares the challenge to victim-blaming but developed through street protest rather than viral testimony.
Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act: A 2022 U.S. federal law allowing people alleging sexual assault or harassment to bring claims in court despite certain predispute arbitration agreements. The law addressed a workplace practice that can keep harassment claims out of public courts.
