Mechanics' Institute

A voluntary educational institution that offered lectures, libraries, and classes, especially to artisans and other working people. Mechanics' institutes spread from Britain across the nineteenth-century world.

Andersonian Institution: An educational institution founded in Glasgow in 1796 under the bequest of John Anderson. Its popular science lectures helped inspire the first mechanics' institute.
Adult Education: Education designed for people beyond conventional school age. Mechanics' institutes were an early organized form of adult education.
Melbourne Mechanics' Institute: A Melbourne educational and cultural institution founded in 1839, later renamed the Melbourne Athenaeum. It shows the institute model taking root in colonial Australia.
Public Library: A library open to the public and commonly supported by public funding. Institute libraries helped establish local demand for broader access to books.
George Birkbeck: A physician and educator who helped establish adult education in Glasgow and London. His Glasgow lectures to artisans led to the founding of the London Mechanics' Institution.

Birmingham and Midland Institute: An educational institution founded in Birmingham in 1854 to promote science, literature, and art. It extended mechanics' institute ideals into a major industrial city's civic life.
Birkbeck, University of London: A public research university in London that developed from the London Mechanics' Institution. It is a surviving institutional descendant of the movement.
London Mechanics' Institution: A London adult-education society founded in 1823 and later known as Birkbeck, University of London. It became the movement's most influential early institution.
Subscription Library: A library funded by membership fees or subscriptions. Membership libraries gave institute participants continuing access to books.
