Mechanised agriculture

Mechanised agriculture uses machines to perform or assist farm tasks such as tilling, planting, harvesting, and processing crops. It reduces reliance on human and animal power and can increase the scale and speed of farm operations.

Tractor: A powered vehicle designed to pull or operate agricultural implements. Tractors supply mobile power for tillage, planting, transport, and many other field tasks.
Threshing machine: A machine that separates grain from stalks and husks after harvest. Early threshers mechanised a labor-intensive step and helped spur farm machinery adoption.
Mechanical cotton picker: A machine that harvests cotton by removing cotton from plants in the field. Its adoption replaced much hand picking and altered labor demand in cotton production.
Agricultural productivity: The amount of agricultural output produced from a given set of inputs. Machines can raise output per worker and increase the area one farm can cultivate.
Subsistence agriculture: Agriculture primarily directed toward producing food for the farm household or local community. Its smaller scale and labor organization can differ sharply from machine-intensive commercial farming.
Combine harvester: A machine that reaps, threshes, and cleans grain crops in a continuous operation. It mechanises several harvest stages that were once performed separately.
Steam tractor: A self-propelled or traction engine powered by steam and used for farm work. Steam power preceded the internal-combustion tractor on some large farms.
Sugarcane harvester: A machine that cuts and gathers sugarcane for processing. It mechanises harvesting a tall, bulky crop that is difficult to handle manually.
Farm consolidation: The process by which agricultural production shifts toward fewer, larger farms. Expensive machinery can favor operations that spread equipment costs across more land.
Labor-intensive agriculture: Agriculture that relies heavily on human labor relative to machinery and other capital. It provides a direct contrast to production systems organized around powered equipment.
