Mechanoreception

Mechanoreception is the detection of physical forces, including touch, pressure, vibration, and stretch, by sensory systems. It begins when mechanical deformation alters activity in specialized sensory cells or neurons.

Mechanotransduction: The conversion of mechanical force into electrical or biochemical signals by cells. It names the central step that turns force detected by a sensory system into a signal.
Mechanoreceptor: A sensory receptor that responds to mechanical deformation, movement, or force. This is the specialized detector that gives mechanoreception its name.
Touch: The perception of contact and physical interaction with the body, mediated largely by skin sensory systems. Touch is the familiar perceptual outcome of mechanical signals from the skin.
Johannes Müller: A German physiologist whose doctrine of specific nerve energies linked sensory experience to the activity of particular nerves. His framework helped distinguish sensory modalities, including mechanically evoked sensations.
Force-from-lipids model: A model in which membrane tension directly gates mechanosensitive ion channels through their surrounding lipid bilayer. It offers one explanation for how mechanical force reaches a channel without a separate tether.
Mechanically gated ion channel: An ion channel whose opening or closing depends on mechanical force or membrane tension. These channels can directly convert deformation into changes in a sensory cell’s electrical activity.
Somatosensation: The perception of bodily sensations, including touch, temperature, pain, and position. Mechanoreception supplies much of the touch and body-position information within this broader sensory system.
Hearing: The perception of sound produced by auditory processing of vibrations in the environment. Inner-ear hair cells detect sound-driven mechanical vibrations and convert them into neural signals.
Ernst Heinrich Weber: A German physiologist who studied touch and developed early quantitative methods for measuring sensory discrimination. His experiments made tactile sensitivity measurable rather than merely descriptive.
Tether model (mechanotransduction): A model in which mechanical force gates an ion channel through links to the cytoskeleton or extracellular structures. It contrasts with direct lipid-mediated gating as an explanation for channel activation.
