Mecklenburg

Mecklenburg is a historic region on the southern Baltic coast, ruled for centuries by a dynasty whose branches held claims to the Swedish throne.

Obotrites: A medieval West Slavic people who inhabited territories around the southern Baltic. Their principality provided the political foundation from which Mecklenburg emerged.
Albert II, Duke of Mecklenburg: A 14th-century duke of Mecklenburg and father of Sweden’s King Albert. His son’s Swedish accession brought the dynasty into Scandinavian politics.
Duchy of Mecklenburg: A duchy in northern Germany ruled by the Mecklenburg dynasty from the 14th century. It formalized the dynasty’s rule over the historic region.
Kalmar Union: A union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a shared monarch from 1397 to 1523. Mecklenburg’s Swedish royal claim emerged from struggles over Scandinavian union rule.

Henry the Lion: A powerful 12th-century Saxon duke who expanded eastward into Slavic lands. His campaigns reshaped the region after Niklot’s resistance.
Christopher of Bavaria: A 15th-century king of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway from the House of Wittelsbach. His Scandinavian rule followed Albert’s defeat and displaced Mecklenburg influence.
