Medes

The Medes were an ancient Iranian people who established a kingdom in western Iran and helped overthrow the Assyrian Empire in the seventh century BCE.

Iranian peoples: A group of peoples historically linked by Iranian languages and related cultural traditions. The Medes belonged to the broader Iranian-speaking world.
Median kingdom: A political formation in western Iran that emerged as a major power in the seventh and sixth centuries BCE. It was the state through which Median rulers organized regional power.
Achaemenid Empire: The Persian Empire founded by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE and expanded across western and central Asia. Persian rule succeeded Median power across much of the Iranian plateau.
Nabonidus Chronicle: A Babylonian chronicle tablet recording events during the reign of Nabonidus, including Cyrus's victory over the Medes. Its account provides a Babylonian record of the Median kingdom's defeat.
Median language: An extinct Iranian language known chiefly through names and loanwords preserved in other languages. Place names and personal names offer clues to the language spoken by the Medes.
Cyaxares: A Median king traditionally credited with reorganizing the army and leading campaigns against Assyria. Ancient accounts associate his rule with Median military expansion.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who conquered the Median kingdom in the sixth century BCE. His victory ended Median independence and transferred power to the Persians.
Median wall: A defensive structure described by Greek authors as a boundary associated with the Medes. Later accounts connect this reported fortification with Median defenses.

Battle of Nineveh: The 612 BCE siege and capture of Nineveh by a coalition that included Medes and Babylonians. The Medes helped bring down Assyria's principal capital.
