Media event

A planned public occasion designed to attract live or extensive media coverage. Its staging and timing make it newsworthy as well as communicative.

Press conference: A formal meeting where people answer journalists’ questions and make statements for public dissemination. Its question-and-answer format makes it a common media event.
Daniel J. Boorstin: An American historian who popularized the term “pseudo-event” in his 1961 book The Image. His account of publicity-driven happenings anticipates the planned media event.
Product launch: A planned public introduction of a new product to customers, journalists, or industry audiences. Companies stage launches to generate coverage and establish a product narrative.
News event: An occurrence judged newsworthy and reported by journalistic organizations. Unlike a media event, it need not be planned to attract coverage.
Media spectacle: A public performance or occurrence organized to command attention through mass media. It describes the attention-grabbing form many media events take.
Pseudo-event: An event deliberately created chiefly to be reported, discussed, or reproduced. Boorstin’s term criticizes the publicity logic that media events can embody.
Political rally: A public gathering organized to demonstrate support for a political cause or candidate. Its crowds, speeches, and symbols provide readily broadcast political imagery.
Media ritual: A recurring media practice that gives public meaning to collective actions or ceremonies. Rituals can shape media events, but the terms describe different aspects.
Public relations: The practice of managing communication between an organization and its publics. Organizers use it to shape coverage and public interpretation.
Dayan and Katz's media events: A theory of televised ceremonies developed by Daniel Dayan and Elihu Katz in their 1992 book Media Events. Their formulation established a influential framework for analyzing live broadcast occasions.
