Medical microbiology

Medical microbiology studies microorganisms that cause human disease and the methods used to identify, diagnose, treat, and prevent their infections.

Pathogen: A biological agent that causes disease in a host. Medical microbiology focuses on pathogens that infect humans.
Clinical microbiology laboratory: A diagnostic laboratory that detects and characterizes microorganisms in patient specimens. It applies medical microbiology methods to support diagnosis and treatment.
Sepsis: Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection. Rapid pathogen detection can support urgent sepsis treatment decisions.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis: The bacterium that causes tuberculosis, a contagious disease most often affecting the lungs. Its slow growth and specialized diagnostics illustrate distinctive laboratory challenges.
Infectious disease: A disease caused by infection with a pathogen. This is the clinical outcome medical microbiology investigates and helps manage.
Microbial culture: The growth of microorganisms in or on prepared nutrient media. Culturing can recover viable pathogens for identification and susceptibility testing.
Antimicrobial stewardship: Coordinated efforts to improve antimicrobial prescribing and reduce avoidable harm and resistance. Microbiology results help narrow or stop unnecessary antimicrobial therapy.
Staphylococcus aureus: A bacterium that can cause skin infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infection, and other diseases. Its drug-resistant strains make identification and susceptibility testing clinically consequential.
Host–pathogen interaction: The dynamic relationship between an infectious agent and the organism it infects. Disease depends on both microbial traits and the human response.
Gram stain: A differential staining method that classifies bacteria by cell-wall properties and morphology. It gives a rapid first view of bacteria in clinical specimens.
