Medicinal chemistry designs, synthesizes, and studies chemical compounds to discover and develop medicines. It connects molecular structure to biological activity, efficacy, and safety.

Structure–activity relationship: The relationship between a compound’s chemical structure and its biological effects. Medicinal chemists use these patterns to identify structural changes that improve a candidate’s activity.
Organic chemistry: The study of carbon-containing compounds, their structures, properties, and reactions. Its reaction knowledge enables the synthesis and modification of candidate drug molecules.
