Medieval commune

A self-governing urban community in medieval Europe, formed through collective action to secure local legal and political rights.

Communal oath: A sworn agreement binding members of a medieval community to mutual obligations and collective action. The oath made solidarity between townspeople a foundation for common government.
Medieval urbanization: The growth and expansion of towns and cities in Europe during the Middle Ages. Growing populations and commerce created urban groups able to press for autonomy.
Feudalism: A system of political and social relationships organized around landholding, service, and personal bonds. Communal authority rested on collective urban rights rather than solely on lord-vassal ties.
Milan: A city in northern Italy that became a major political and economic power in the Middle Ages. Milan’s communal government emerged through conflict among citizens, bishops, and imperial rulers.

Florence: A central Italian city whose medieval government became a major force in regional politics. Florence illustrates the growth of elaborate communal offices and factional politics.
Consul: An elected magistrate, especially one serving in the government of a medieval Italian city. Consuls were a common form of executive leadership in Italian communes.
Investiture Controversy: A struggle between popes and rulers over who could appoint bishops and other church officials. The weakening or distraction of local authorities sometimes opened space for urban self-rule.
