Medieval historiography

Medieval historiography is the study and interpretation of historical writing produced in the Middle Ages, including chronicles, annals, biographies, and universal histories.

Chronicle: A historical narrative that records events in chronological order, often year by year. Chronicles are among the most common forms of medieval historical writing.
Compilation: The assembling of material from multiple sources into a single work. Many medieval histories combine earlier narratives, records, and local testimony.
Historical method: The practices historians use to evaluate evidence and construct accounts of the past. Modern interpretation tests medieval claims against source context and corroborating evidence.
Ecclesiastical History of the English People: Bede’s early eighth-century account of Christianity and political history in Britain. Bede’s work demonstrates how ecclesiastical history could shape a people’s past.
Annals: Records of events arranged by year, often presented as brief entries. Annals show how medieval writers organized historical memory around successive years.

Memory studies: The interdisciplinary study of how societies remember, represent, and transmit the past. Medieval histories reveal which events communities preserved and how they framed them.
Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: A collection of Old English annals begun in the late ninth century and continued in multiple versions. Its parallel manuscripts expose local variation within a shared annalistic tradition.
Medieval Latin: The form of Latin used in medieval writing, shaped by regional and institutional practices. Latin connected historical writing across medieval Western European institutions.
Medieval manuscript: A handwritten book or document produced in the medieval period. Manuscript copies preserve both the text and evidence of its transmission.
