Medieval universities

Medieval universities were corporations of teachers and students that emerged in European towns from the late eleventh century onward. They secured collective privileges and organized advanced teaching through recognized degrees and faculties.

Universitas: A medieval Latin term for a legally recognized corporate body, including a community of teachers or students. Universities began as corporate associations whose members claimed shared legal rights.
University of Bologna: A university in Bologna that developed from a community of students studying Roman and canon law. Its student corporations became a prominent model of university self-government.
Lectio: A medieval teaching exercise in which a master read and explained an authoritative text. Lectures organized instruction around close interpretation of prescribed books.
Canon law: The body of laws and legal principles governing the Christian Church. University study trained specialists who interpreted and administered church law.
Faculty (division): A university division organized around a field of study and its teachers. Medieval faculties grouped instruction in arts, law, medicine, and theology.
University of Paris: A medieval university that developed from schools around Paris’s cathedral and became renowned for theology and arts. Its masters’ corporation shaped a different model from Bologna’s student-led organization.
Disputation: A formal debate in which participants argued a question using established rules of reasoning. Disputations tested students’ command of arguments and trained them in scholastic reasoning.
Roman law: The legal system developed in ancient Rome and preserved in influential compilations such as Justinian’s Corpus Juris Civilis. Its renewed study at universities supplied methods and texts for European legal practice.
Scholasticism: A method of learning that used structured questions, argument, and commentary to reconcile authoritative texts. Scholastic methods shaped the disputations and textual teaching practiced in universities.
University of Oxford: A university in England whose teaching community took shape in the twelfth century. Oxford shows how university institutions spread beyond their earliest Italian and French centers.
