Meher Baba

Meher Baba (1894–1969) was an Indian spiritual teacher who taught that God is the only reality and observed public silence from 1925 until his death.

Advaita Vedanta: A Hindu philosophical tradition that teaches the ultimate identity of the individual self and Brahman. Its nondual language offers a useful comparison for Baba’s claim that God alone is real.
Pune: A city in Maharashtra, India, historically known as Poona. Baba was born in Poona and began his spiritual life in its regional setting.
Meher Baba's silence: Meher Baba’s public practice of silence, begun on 10 July 1925 and continued until his death. His silence made gesture boards and hand movements central to communication.

Shirdi Sai Baba: An Indian spiritual teacher revered by Hindus and Muslims, who lived in Shirdi until 1918. Baba’s early spiritual encounters included a meeting with Shirdi Sai Baba.
Meher Baba's alphabet board: A board of letters used by Meher Baba to spell words before he stopped using it in 1954. It provided a written means of communication during much of his silence.
Meher Baba's followers: People around the world who accept or engage with Meher Baba’s teachings and spiritual authority. Their communities carried Baba’s teachings beyond India and his lifetime.
Jiddu Krishnamurti: An Indian philosopher and speaker who rejected organized spiritual authority and the role of guru. Krishnamurti denied the kind of spiritual authority Baba claimed.
