Melanogenesis

Melanogenesis is the production of melanin pigment by melanocytes. It is regulated by genetic factors, hormonal signals, and ultraviolet exposure.

Tyrosine: Tyrosine is an amino acid used to build proteins and as a precursor for several biological molecules. Melanin synthesis begins when melanogenic enzymes convert tyrosine into reactive intermediates.
Melanocyte: A melanocyte is a pigment-producing cell that synthesizes melanin in melanosomes. Melanocytes are the cells that carry out melanogenesis.
Tanning: Tanning is the darkening of skin after ultraviolet exposure, caused largely by increased melanin and pigment redistribution. UV-triggered tanning is a familiar outcome of increased melanogenic activity.
MC1R: MC1R is a cell-surface receptor that regulates pigment type in melanocytes. Its signaling influences the balance between eumelanin and pheomelanin production.
Eumelanin and pheomelanin: Eumelanin and pheomelanin are the two major melanin types, differing in color, chemistry, and photoprotective properties. Their distinct synthesis routes explain why melanogenesis produces different pigmentation outcomes.
Tyrosinase: Tyrosinase is a copper-containing enzyme that catalyzes key reactions in melanin production. It controls the initial oxidation steps that commit tyrosine to melanin synthesis.
Melanin: Melanin is a group of pigments that color skin, hair, and eyes and absorb light. Melanogenesis is the process that produces this broader pigment family.
Albinism: Albinism is a group of inherited conditions involving reduced or absent melanin production. Some forms result from genetic changes that impair melanogenesis.
Melanocortin 1 receptor signaling: Melanocortin 1 receptor signaling is a pathway that stimulates melanocyte pigment production through cyclic AMP. This pathway links melanocortin signals to increased eumelanin synthesis.
Amelanotic melanoma: Amelanotic melanoma is a melanoma that produces little or no visible melanin. It shows that melanocyte-derived cancer can grow without the pigment-making activity typical of melanocytes.
