Melanosome

A membrane-bound organelle in pigment-producing cells where melanin is synthesized, stored, and transported. Its maturation and transfer help determine pigmentation in skin, hair, and eyes.

Melanogenesis: The cellular process that produces melanin from the amino acid tyrosine. This biochemical pathway operates inside developing melanosomes.
Melanocyte: A pigment-producing cell that synthesizes melanin in specialized organelles. Melanosomes develop and function inside these cells.
Skin pigmentation: The coloration of skin produced chiefly by melanin and its distribution in skin cells. Melanosome abundance, pigment content, and transfer contribute to skin color.
Hermansky–Pudlak syndrome: A group of inherited disorders involving defective lysosome-related organelles and often causing albinism and bleeding problems. Its mutations expose genes required for melanosome formation and trafficking.
Tyrosinase: An enzyme that catalyzes key early reactions in melanin production. Its activity within melanosomes initiates pigment synthesis.
Keratinocyte: The predominant cell type in the outer layer of mammalian skin. Keratinocytes receive melanosomes from melanocytes.
Hair color: The natural coloration of hair, determined largely by the types and amounts of melanin in hair shafts. Melanocytes deliver melanosomes to developing hair cells.
Griscelli syndrome: A rare inherited disorder characterized by abnormal pigment distribution and, in some forms, immune or neurological disease. Its trafficking defects show how melanosomes depend on cellular transport machinery.
Melanosome maturation: The staged development of melanosomes from early vesicles into pigment-filled organelles. Maturation changes the organelle’s structure as melanin accumulates.
Endosome: A membrane-bound compartment that sorts material taken up or moved within a cell. Melanosomes arise through pathways related to endosomal membrane trafficking.
