Memoir

A memoir is a first-person account shaped around selected experiences, relationships, or themes rather than a complete life story. It presents remembered events through the writer’s perspective.

Autobiography: A first-person account of a person's life, usually covering a broad span from early life onward. Memoir selects a subject or period, while autobiography more often attempts a life-wide account.
Selection bias: A distortion caused when the cases or information considered are not representative of the whole. Choosing which memories to include can make a memoir’s version of a life partial.
The Diary of a Young Girl: Anne Frank’s diary, written while she and her family hid from Nazi persecution in Amsterdam. Its dated entries preserve a young writer’s experience under persecution in an immediate first-person form.
Diary: A dated, usually private record of a person's experiences, thoughts, or observations. A diary records entries as events unfold; memoir shapes past experience retrospectively.
Testimony: An account offered as evidence or witness, especially about an event personally experienced. Memoirs can preserve first-person witness to events that official records leave incomplete.
Narrative nonfiction: Nonfiction that uses narrative techniques such as scenes, characters, and plot to present real events. Memoir is one form of nonfiction shaped through narrative.
Narrative structure: The arrangement of events and information in a narrative. Structure gives selected experiences an order and a pattern of meaning.
Night (memoir): Elie Wiesel’s account of his deportation to Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a teenager. Wiesel centers his memoir on survival and the moral aftermath of the Holocaust.
Personal essay: A nonfiction prose work that explores a subject through the author's personal perspective. A personal essay may use experience to examine an idea without building a life narrative.
Collective memory: Shared representations of the past maintained by a group or society. Widely read memoirs can influence how communities remember historical events.
